A Living Legacy in the Heart of Alaska

Nestled in the fertile Matanuska Valley, just 45 miles north of Anchorage and framed by the majestic Chugach and Talkeetna mountains, the Musk Ox Farm is more than a destination—it’s a journey into deep time. On this historic 1930s-era Colony farm, a herd of gentle musk oxen—once companions of woolly mammoths and saber-tooth tigers—roam peacefully under the care of passionate stewards.

The farm is operated by the Musk Ox Development Corporation (MODC), a nonprofit dedicated to gentle musk ox husbandry, sustainable qiviut production, and public education. Known as “Oomingmak” in the Inupiaq language, meaning “The Bearded One,” the musk ox is a fitting tribute to these majestic, ancient creatures.

Qiviut:

The Arctic’s Finest Fiber

Each year the musk ox naturally sheds qiviut (kiv-ee-yoot), a rare underwool that’s warmer than wool and even softer than cashmere. Skilled farm hands carefully comb, clean, and spin these delicate fibers into luxurious, sustainably produced yarns and garments. Visitors can purchase these exquisite items in the gift shop, confident that their purchases support conservation efforts that help protect the species and preserve its fragile habitat.

Meet the Herd

Guided tours offer visitors the opportunity to get up close to musk oxen while learning about their biology, behavior, and the ongoing conservation efforts that protect this remarkable Arctic species. As home to the world’s largest captive musk ox herd, the nonprofit farm is dedicated to education, research, and responsible stewardship.

Tours change with the seasons and are designed for all interests—whether you’re passionate about fiber arts, enrichment activities with the herd, or simply want to learn more about these unique animals.

Programs are updated regularly at muskoxfarm.org/meet-the-herd.
